I have been nanny for a family for over 4 years now; beginning when the child was 2. She is now 6. Prior to my work as a nanny, I babysat regularly for a former teacher of mine during high school; watching her 2 children (ages 3 and 6). I was also employed by School Age Care (before and after school program) of the Boulder Valley School District. I worked after school with elementary aged students (K-5) providing homework help/reading tutoring, arts and craft projects, organized physical activity and supervised library and computer time. As far as what I do now as a part time a nanny, I pick her up from the bus stop now that she is in Kindergarten. We go to her house and have a snack and talk about her day at school. Thursdays are homework days, and we complete homework right away! After that, I encourage her to read or work on some art. When the weather is better, playing outside or venturing to the park is an option, as well. We also go to the local library once a week. I allow her to watch 1-2 educational TV shows after she has done the other things, while I am preparing dinner. I love to cook and bake, sometimes I choose things that are fun for her to join me in helping make. After dinner is bath time. After bath and teeth brushing, we pick 2 books to read together and I tuck her into bed. I then clean up the kitchen and perhaps need to do some other light housework, like tending to her laundry. |

Sticking to a fairly firm schedule/routine is important to me, as i believe children need some structure; but letting loose sometimes is equally as significant. Safety and good nutrition are of great importance; as is rewarding good behavior and addressing poor. What is perhaps most important to me is allowing a child to find their interests on their own and encouraging/fostering those things. |
