The nanny has the following experience:

When I suddenly found myself widowed with 2 very young children, I embarked on a life long experience in caring for children. This included my own children as well as those I took in over the years. I have had day care in my house before school (when my children were little) I am around 3 and 4 year olds every day when I teach pre-school. I have references of when I do overnights for a family that has a 5 year old and an 8 year old. I constantly read the latest medical journals and pediatric journals and keep up with the latest trends. I am probably one of the most widely experienced people (with children you will every meet). Other strong talents I have fine tuned and developed include being an excellent chief and house manager. I can create a wonderful meal with just about anything available in the pantry. I am known for my "amazing-tasting" sauces and savory dishes. I am able to do the grocery shopping, and basically all the arrangements that need to be done in the kitchen. As a house manager I am able to plan and arrange and execute all appointments, such as medical, sports, and / or musical events the children are in. I am brilliant at getting estimates for any type of service such as maintenance and repairs that are needed in the household. When my children attended elementary school, I started a child care service of having several children over in the mornings before school started. One of my greatest adventures with my 2 children was taking them on a 2 month camping trip (when they were 4 and 8 years old). I taught them biology, astronomy, geology, story-telling (around the camp fire) and journaling, just to name a few of the lessons learned on the trip. There were scheduled activities as well as spontaneous fun days. I put myself through college and became a licensed elementary school teacher and taught for 10 years. Then the corporate world beckoned me as the family budget expenses grew. As an executive assistant and office manager I have had many years of planning and organizing events and negotiating deals. I have put together many contracts that can work as well in household management. Now that the children have grown up, I’m back to teaching (substituting) and being requested daily by seasoned teachers who recognize my talents and skills. I have been working with a developmentally disabled person for 3 years and thoroughly enjoy it. This has been a part time situation fitting around the schedule of the special needs person. It is rewarding to enrich a child’s life no matter if it is in the classroom or in the home setting or on an adventure.

I am a kid at heart and love adventures. The love of reading and doing hands on activities is how I learn. I am a superb cook and love to be in the kitchen with children. I love going to museums, zoos, parks, hiking in RMNP. I teach painting and love to draw and enjoy making things out of any form of materials available. Music is another personal interest, and going to live sporting events has always been thrilling. Doing research has always intrigued me. The “ah-ha” moments are worth the time and effort in digging up facts, finding the information on the internet, and going through historical records.

Describe your childcare style:

My childcare style is a gentle but firm management. Listening to everyone is a must and hearing all sides of a story. My style is positive re-enforcement and pro-active. My experience from being a teacher for many years is the ability to be extremely flexible and “even change course in mid-stream”. Children benefit from having a say in what they do, having structure and knowing the guidelines and boundaries in their environment. I always work with the parent(s) and their expectations and discipline structure.

What activities do you like to do with children:

I like to have a day with planned activities and the children having a say in what we are going to do (this being age related). Being outdoors is very important on the list. Going on day trips to fun places is always rewarding. Going to the Library, the pool, recreational centers, hiking in a park setting can be spontaneous or a planned activity. Having picnics is very enjoyable for all. Indoor activities would include arts and crafts as well as reading, writing and story-telling. Also teaching the child Internet capabilities. This past year in teaching I found a number of educational web sites that my students loved to be on. This included kindergarten age groups as well as older children. I work with watercolor and tempera painting and well as clay sculpting. Cooking and science projects in the kitchen, reading, and story telling engage everyone in an atmosphere of learning. Any sports the children are involved in would be extended into specialized activities to enhance their talents and skills.

Why are you interested in working as a nanny?

To be around children is a rewarding experience. To enrich and enhance a child’s life is one of the greatest opportunities to have. I thrive in creating an environment filled with learning, discovery and allowing a child to explore all levels of life. I find it very meaningful to watch a child (children) grow as a family member in responsibility and ownership of the choices they are making.

What qualities are important in a nanny?

There are many important qualities to look for in choosing a nanny. I believe there must be a genuine love of being around children, a desire to bring out their talents, their unique personality. and love the process. To me it is important to try and see the world, the situation through their eyes, and how they are establishing themselves on the multi levels of life. Trust, patience, and the skill of communicating are “must have” qualities. Being a listener, hearing what the child is saying, Understanding the situation from all sides (this mostly has to do with siblings). Being extremely resourceful and very creative and having a great sense of humor fills out the rest of the qualities that are important.
