Experience: Most recently I have been a nanny for a 10 month old and her 4 yr old brother (now 2 and 5 ). I continue to provide occasional babysitting for them since they are in pre-school and school and no longer need a nanny. I started babysitting as a young teenager. In college I was a psychology major and volunteered with the Big Sister program and worked in Behavior Modification settings. My first job out of college was as a professional child care worker in a shelter for abused children from ages 4 to 17 where I helped design a sticker based incentive program for the youngest residents. I was quickly promoted to Sr. Childcare Worker where in addition to providing direct care to the children I also began supervising other staff. My graduate degree is in Social Work and I continued to focus on work with children in the capacity of a Play Therapist with children as young as 3 years old. In 1999 I became a nanny for 2 year old David part-time after relocating to Boulder from upstate NY. I remained with this family for several years gradually cutting back to the occasional babysitting they needed. David is now driving a car and about to turn 16 and although I haven’t been his nanny for many years we still have a strong relationship.

Experience with the following age groups: I have nanny experience with ages 9 months to 10 years old. I have professional experience both as a childcare worker and as a play therapist and child and adolescent therapist from ages 3 to 17. I’ve done minimal informal childcare for newborn infants of friends and family.

Interests and hobbies:When I am not having fun playing with, supporting and caring for kids, I can occasionally be found on stage acting in community theater, riding my bicycle to Lyons or up to Jamestown, hiking our local foothills, people watching on Pearl St., walking my dog, reading, meditating, dancing, learning Spanish and perpetually attempting to play guitar.

Describe your childcare style:I like to provide children with a container and the emotional safety of a consistent and reliable routine with built in flexibility for special occasions or adventures. I am affectionate, empathic and compassionate while also being clear and firm with directions and limits when needed for safety and learning. I do not use physical discipline but rather allow children to learn from the natural consequences of their actions similar to the Love N Logic philosophy. I view almost everything as a learning opportunity and almost anything can be fun for example picking up toys can be fun when we make a game out of it.

What activities do you like to do with children:I like to provide a balance of activities with children depending on their age and developmental level including time for physical activity such as walking, running, jumping skipping, throwing balls, riding bikes, playing sports etc., outside time with nature, gardening, leaves, snow play etc. reading and writing and inquisitive activities for example blocks and shapes for the younger ones, perhaps an age appropriate science activity, creative time such as drawing, painting, clay or play dough time or mutual storytelling, music, singing, marching bands and dance opportunities; social time with other kids at a local park or science museum etc.; free unstructured time for their own interests and creativity to emerge, snack and mealtimes which I encourage or allow kids to be involved with depending on their age and interest, quiet down times for naps or just for quiet activities like puzzles, looking at books etc.

Why are you interested in working as a Nanny or Babysitter? I have a natural ability to understand, relate to and communicate with kids of all ages. I truly enjoy their energy, natural curiosity, intelligence and potential. I love being both a witness to and a helpful contributor to their unfolding process. I am currently in the beginning stages of a career transition and will be working part time as I train for and develop a nutritional and health coaching practice. Working part time as a nanny allows me to offer my gifts to the children in my care and the parents while simultaneously allowing me the freedom to work towards fulfilling my other career path.

What qualities are important in a Nanny or Babysitter?I believe the best nannies are consistent, reliable, patient, compassionate, flexible, creative, fun and lighthearted, empathic, imaginative and quick on her or his feet.

Additional comments:I generally pick one family to stay with for a period of time and remain an ongoing support for the kids and parents both even though the nanny role has ended. The first boy I worked with in a nanny capacity as a toddler is now driving a car. I will be celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas with them this year as has become a tradition over the years.
