Describe your childcare style:I like to be very active with the children I care for. I am much more inclined to run around with them than to stick a child in front of the TV or video games. I like to incorporate not only physical activity within a child's day, but also provide mental and emotional stimulation. Whether thats in the form of arts and crafts, music time, learning flash cards, reading & storyboards, or easy cooking & baking projects, all depends on the age and personality of the child, as well as what their parents really value. I am extremely energetic and patient, and although I am a very loving caregiver, I understand the importance of a reasonable level of discipline.

What activities do you like to do with children:I like to do pretty much any activity that allows me to interact with a child to help them learn, grown, and enjoy life. As I mentioned above, the activities I do with kids really vary based on age and the child's preferences. I love being active; chasing & tickling, exploring playgrounds & parks, teaching the basics of a sport (or physical movements, i.e. throwing or kicking a ball). I also really enjoy reading to children or telling stories with felt storyboards. I like providing an environment for creative play; letting the child lead whatever scenario while I fill in the details that help them continue with the make believe scene. I definitely like incorporating music, playing instruments and singalongs alike, as well as lullabies for nap times. Arts & crafts time is another activity I tend to incorporate. Sometimes I will stick with the basics of coloring with crayons or markers, or sometimes I will come up with handy age appropriate crafts (i.e. finger paints to decorate their own personal cup, shakers made of spoons, Easter eggs, and rice, Very Hungry Caterpillar cut and paste cutouts, etc.) I also value incorporating socialization with other kids their age. Having a 1 on 1 interaction between your child and a nanny can offer innumerable benefits, but socialization with other children is invaluable. I enjoy taking children on outings to story times, kid's museums, Gymboree opportunities, etc. and helping guide those interactions that help them learn how to interact appropriately with others and building the foundations of friendship.

Why are you interested in working as a Nanny or Babysitter? I really enjoy caring for children. It is something that I have found is very fulfilling and I find myself to be very good at. It is amazing to see the development of a child in all facets of life. To play a major role in the development of that child is an incredible thing. Plus, kids are just plain fun!

What qualities are important in a Nanny or Babysitter?Good judgment & common sense, loving & warm tendencies, high energy level, clear communication skills, knowledge or background in first aid, creativity, trustworthiness, the ability to provide discipline.

Additional comments:A little bit about me as a person: I grew up in Raleigh, NC and attended Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Upon graduating I moved to Asheville, NC, the east coast version of Boulder. After a short stint in Aville, I worked for a summer as a backcountry instructor in Wyoming for an amazing leadership development program called C5 Youth Foundation. I led at risk youth on 5 day backpacking expeditions and incorporated the program's curriculum that included goal setting, pushing outside of comfort zones, and creating personal mission statements. After finishing with the position at C5, I spent 9 months traveling throughout the western U.S. and New Zealand. While in New Zealand, I au paired for a family with 4 children; a 4 year old girl, 8 year old boy, and twin 10 year old boys. Upon returning to North Carolina I began working at two nanny agencies. It was through one of these agencies that I met the family I then nannied for, for a year. The family consisted of mom and dad who were both doctors (and kept varying hours), and their two adorable children that were both adopted from different families. The kids were about six months apart in age and the youngest was 18 months when I started with them. They were loads of fun and required a lot of energy to keep up with, as well as tons of patience and discipline. My duties ranged from preparing breakfast and lunch, taking them on outings, potty training, and providing a safe and loving environment. I was also in charge of light housework including all of the children's laundry, dishwasher duties, and sweeping. It was also at this time that I realized what my long term career goals were. In one week, I happened to work for three different families that all had children with some form of speech impediment or delay. I have since taken some courses in Speech Language Pathology and plan to apply to Master’s Programs a few years from now. I am very passionate about outdoor adventure sports. I have been whitewater kayaking since I was 12 and I love instructing. I have worked as a kayak instructor for two different summer camps as well as worked for ASU's Outdoor Programs as a trip leader (and event coordinator) during my entire stint in undergrad. I also thoroughly enjoy rock climbing and skiing and cannot wait to spend more time on the mountain. Although I am drawn in by adventures sports, there is nothing wrong with the tried and true, I have been playing soccer for 20+ years. I love everything about the game and really appreciate how it can be played anywhere. I have found it to be a great medium for meeting new people in an area, and it teaches valuable lessons like communication and commitment. I am thrilled to be in the area, and I look forward to working with families as a caregiver and on-call babysitter.
